The Beauvil Foundation had the privilege of sponsoring four talented respiratory therapy students from Mandl School, the College of Allied Health to participate in the prestigious AARC Sputum Bowl in November 2023: Kevin Oreste, Jensy Varkey, Jerry Mensah, and Mitsuca Frederic.

The Sputum Bowl is nationally recognized for its rigorous academic competition, bringing together respiratory therapists, students and professionals alike, from across the nation to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a fast-paced quiz-bowl format. Held in Nashville, Tennessee, this event is a highlight in the respiratory therapy community, helping to foster a spirit of teamwork alongside intellectual growth through competition. While the competition is fierce, the experience for all those involved is invaluable. 31 teams competed in November, and our students played 3 matches. We were happy to help provide these students with a unique opportunity,to apply their knowledge in a hands-on competitive environment. In addition, the event enabled the participants to engage with leaders of the field. We applaud them for their determination and their hard work as aspiring professionals in the field of respiratory care.
The Beauvil Foundation ensured that all expenses were taken care of, including but not limited to travel, room and board, and any entrance fees, allowing our students to focus entirely on the competition. Throughout the event, they demonstrated commendable commitment and teamwork. They faced tough questions and intense rounds with determination, which reflects the high standards of their training at Mandl School and the support of The Beauvil Foundation. Their performance was most definitely a testament to their hard work and passion for respiratory care.
Here’s what Kevin Oreste, one of the student competitors, had to say about the experience:
“Traveling to Nashville was a great experience, and I was excited to attend the competition. I prepared by studying and practicing with my team, and we also watched videos of previous competitions to get a sense of what to expect. Attending the competition was amazing - it was great to meet other students who were passionate about respiratory care, and the competition itself was both challenging and rewarding.
The main thing I took away from the experience was the importance of teamwork and communication in healthcare. It was clear that the other teams had put in a lot of effort and had a strong support system, and it made me appreciate the value of collaboration in achieving success.”
We could not be more proud of what our students achieved. Their participation in the AARC Sputum Bowl was not only a significant academic milestone but also an inspiring journey of growth and learning. Congratulations to our incredible team for their outstanding effort and commitment. We look forward to supporting more students in future competitions and continuing to foster excellence in respiratory care education.
